Head Start is a program for three and four year old children from low income families or catagorical eligibility such as homelessness. Services are offered that help shape the attitudes and health habits of preschoolers. Child Start, Head Start services residents of Sedgwick and Harper counties.Transportation is available in some locations. There are several options to choose from, such as full day or part day, center, family child care, or home based options.
Head Start Is An Early Education Program That:
- Helps children grow educationally, socially, physically and emotionally.
- Helps parents obtain needed services for their families.
- Enriches parents' relationship with their children.
- Provides medical, dental, vision and hearing screenings for children.
Head Start Children Receive:
- Fun, educational activities in the center or at home.
- Nutritious family-style meals and snacks.
- Free health and dental services.
- Vision, hearing, and speech screenings.
- All sites serve children with diagnosed disabilities.
- Family/parent support.
- A chance to learn, play, and grow with other children.
Head Start Parents:
- Participate in children's educational activities and development.
- Obtain referrals for needed assistance.
- Receive training opportunities.
- Attend/participate in monthly center parent meetings.
- Have an opportunity to volunteer in the classroom.
Center Based Program:
- For 3 and 4 year olds.
- Learning activities and experience in a classroom environment.
- Child attends the center for 3 1/2 hours per day, Monday through Thursday.
- Field trips and educational walks.
- Play and learn with other children.

A comprehensive physical, developmental and dental exam is given to each child, and followed up by appropriate health care measures.
Children End the Year……
- Fully immunized
- Beginning to print their names
- Using numbers and counting
- Showing ability to adjust to new situations
Qualifications:
- Child must be 3 or 4 years old on or before August 31st.
- Family must live within the Sedgwick or Harper County area.
- Family must meet federal poverty income guidelines.
Head Start also offers:
