Letter to the Editor

July 1, 2009

I am writing in response to the July 1 article, “Woman testifies of watching toddler being beaten before death.”

Testimony delivered during the Lloyd trial illustrates the importance of affordable, quality child care.

Young children do better when parents place them in the care of a limited number of trusted caregivers. A single call to Child Start can lead parents to several services that are not only designed to keep children safe, but to give children excellent experiences that prepare them for success.

A parent can call Child Start to learn if they are eligible for free child care in a high quality setting. Even families who do not meet eligibility requirements can learn about how to recognize a highly qualified child care provider.

A strong bond between a young child and a limited number of caregivers is important for healthy social and emotional development. A parent should seek a consistent, qualified caregiver for a young child.
