Additional Children to receive Child start services
Child Start has been awarded expansion and quality improvement grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The grants expand access to the Head Start 0-5 Program to 60 additional three-year-olds in Wichita. The expansion creates 14 new jobs including preschool teachers, family service workers and early childhood mental health specialists.
“Currently we are looking for space to serve these new children. We are to be ready to serve children in classrooms by February, 2010” said Teresa Rupp, Executive Director of Child Start.
There are enough Head Start 0-5 Program slots available in Sedgwick County to serve about 15% of the children that meet eligibility guidelines. The Head Start 0-5 Program is an intensive program designed for children with the most barriers to success. There are other free or reduced-cost early childhood programs that have more liberal enrollment criteria but they are not as comprehensive.
Child Start, Inc. is a private, nonprofit agency in operation since 1958 promoting early childhood experiences that prepare children for success in school and beyond. Administering Early Head Start, Head Start and the Child Care Resource and Referral program, Child Start works with parents, child care providers, early educators and caregivers providing a wide range of services to ensure that children enter school ready to learn. For more information about Child Start, please visit www.childstart.org on the Internet or contact the agency at 316-682-1853. Child Start is located at 1069 S. Glendale in Wichita.
